Planta 035

Project/Samedan restoration/Completed

Chesa Tamangur

A 1687 chasa restored as a longevity house: arve sleep floor, granite plunge, one stove, lime on every wall.

We took the house back to 1687 before we added anything. Under four paint layers the stuva walls were still arve, dry and sound, cut from the God da Tamangur stands above Val S-charl. The owners asked for a house that would earn its keep as the family's health anchor, a place where sleep, cold water, heat, and quiet do the work a clinic charges for. The program follows the building's own logic: the rooms that were always warm stay warm, the rooms that were always dark sleep eight, and the stable becomes the bath.

The arve floor, soaped and rebuilt

We soaped the original panels and built the beds from the same wood at our joinery in S-chanf. No lacquer anywhere; the wood keeps breathing and scenting the rooms. The sleep floor holds true dark behind the original small openings and new solid shutters.

A Giltstein stove through the wall

A new soapstone stove from a Poschiavo hafner heats the whole sleeping floor through the masonry, one burn at dawn and one at dusk. The Ofenbank seats two readers. There is no ducted air in the house.

The stable becomes the bath

Where the stable stood we set a plunge basin in Andeer granite, fed cold from the old spring line, and a small wood-fired sauna under the talvo stair. The sequence runs sauna, plunge, loggia, and takes twenty minutes before breakfast.

Lime inside and out

Pit-lime plaster inside, lime render and sgraffito outside, redrawn by hand. The kitchen kept its fumara vault. Linen for bed and bath comes from Tessanda in Sta. Maria, woven by hand since 1928.

The south loggia

Two larch daybeds and a chest of wool blankets hold the Davos cure-porch tradition. An hour out there in January does more than the gym ever did. The house sleeps eight, quietly.

Tradition

The Engadin stuva was always the warm, paneled heart of the house. This restoration returns that logic and adds the bath the original farmers never had time for.
